Chris Banahan was born Nottingham 1958 to Irish Parents. After a period at a sanatorium for Tuberculosis at 13 years of age, developed a fascination for drawing and painting and in 1981 graduated with First Class Honours B.A. Fine Art from Nottingham Trent University. In 1984 obtained an M.A Fine Art, Goldsmiths College, London and in 1990 awarded a Rome Award in Painting Scholarship, British School of Rome.
In Italy he was inspired by the ‘Poetic fragments of decay’ upon Ancient fresco surfaces particularly in Pompeii, of which most of his painting is still influenced by. He lives in Ireland since 1993 and his studio is in Kinvara, Galway.
He has undertaken numerous Public ‘Per Cent for Art Commissions’ involving Portraiture, Such as Dundalk DIT 2002, Stratford College 2003, Dublin,Tipperary. Institute 2004, North side Civic Centre, Coolcock, Dublin 2004,Mervue Portraits, Galway 2007,Clocherince Portraits, Kildare 2008 and Tralee IT 2009.
He has represented Ireland Internationally in;’Metaphor for Ireland’ Paintings & Poetics’ Boston University 1997 and ‘Contemporary Art from Ireland’ European Central Bank, Frankfurt 2005.
Work in Public Collections; O.P.W, Arts Council, A.I.B, Microsoft Ireland And the Central Bank.
