Irene Uhlemann studied Fine Art at Dun Laoghaire School of Art & Design (now IADT) and did her teaching diploma in the National College of Art and Design. She has taught in Ireland and in the UK.

She was always drawing as a child; an interest encouraged and nurtured by her father Leo Uhlemann who regularly took the family to the National Gallery, the National Museum and the Natural History Museum on Sunday mornings. The surname is German; her grandfather Karl Uhlemann eventually became head chef of the Gresham Hotel but also loved to paint. Some paintings were accepted for RA exhibitions. Her uncle Karl Uhlemann was a graphic artist who illustrated many schoolbooks and designed some of our postage stamps.

Irene was a member of Temple Bar Gallery & Studios from the mid 80s to the early 00s. She had her first solo show in the gallery there. The subject matter for the show was a direct response to a road traffic accident where she sustained serious injuries and was in a coma for nearly two weeks from serious head trauma. It took many years to recover; her latest surgery was back in 2010.

“My work is a journey exploring memory, identity and place. It is open-ended and evolving. It traverses manmade and natural environments that act as a conduit for a personal narrative surrounding isolation, separation and loss; motifs present in my work. These environments can also be works of the mind built from strata of memory and become psychological studies.” (Artist’s statement)

She has recently become a studio member of New Art Studios in Mary’s Abbey in Dublin and is also a member of Leitrim Sculpture Centre and Visual Artists Ireland. While painting and drawing are her first loves, she is looking forward to experimenting with form and digital imagery. She took a weekend Digital Printmaking workshop in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre. She has also become interested in Screen Printing and has completed two courses in the Blackchurch Print Studio in Temple Bar. One of her screen prints was selected for the Leitrim Sculpture Centre Annual Christmas Show. Some recent work is currently on display in Project Space, New Art Studios, Mary’s Abbey, Dublin 1 until 3rd March 2013. Irene can be contacted through New Art Studios.

The egg Irene painted for The Big Egg Hunt is a departure from her own work. The idea began when she visited IMMA on a grey, winter’s day. As well as ice skating there were fairground attractions on offer; one of which was the merry-go-round. The colour on such a bleak day was like a magnet for her. Irene thought the merry-go-round would be an ideal theme for the Jack & Jill Foundation charity. Children and adults respond to colour on an emotional level and many adults have pleasant childhood memories of the fairground coming to their locale.

“Memories shape our identity and give us a sense of place or belonging and are, for me, inextricably linked within the human psyche and are universally recognised.” (Artist’s statement)
