Maria O’ Donovan graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design @ L.I.T. in 2007, with an honours degree in Fine Art - Sculpture and Combined Media and more recently in 2010 from The Crawford College of Art and Design @C.I.T. with a Higher Diploma in Art and Design Education. As a contemporary visual artist Maria O’ Donovan is concept driven and experimental within her own work, and enjoys process. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally and is committed to introducing art practice into rural areas to promote social inclusion and create a strong and positive arts ethic through community engagement. Maria also strives to develop art practice through her position as an Art teacher in CBS Secondary School, Thurles. Most recently Maria led the Slieveardagh Community Art Project; a 16ft external mosaic celebrating the history and traditions of the people of the Slieveardagh area in Tipperary.

Growing up in a rural community on a small family run farm in the Slieveardagh Hills of County Tipperary, the concepts of tradition, preservation and the female character have always been strong themes in the work of Maria O’ Donovan. She enjoys deconstructing the Stories, Myths and legends she heard growing up, both at home and in the schools she attended. Maria feels the need to investigate the ideas of conserving and preserving these stories, exploring how and why they have and are changing with time. She feels that these stories tell us about the pursuit of romance, riches and power, they teach us morals and the lessons of hard work, they were intended to guide us to stay on the right path and teach us about good prevailing over evil. But in our modern world of war, crooked politics and terror, she often wonders if these myths and tales can still speak to us today?
