Born in Worcester in 1949, Martin Gale was educated in Ireland and graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 1973. A year later he moved with his family to West Wicklow, and subsequently to the Kildare-Wicklow border, where he presently lives and works.
Painting in a realist mode, his work is often characterised by close attention to detail. His paintings are predominately landscape based, usually incorporating one or more figures. Martin Gale has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and abroad. He has had numerous one-man shows and was the subject of an Arts Council touring exhibiton in the early 1980’s. He represented Ireland in the 1980 Paris Biennale, and has exhibited in all the major group shows in Ireland. He is a member of Aosdana and a full member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 2005 he was the subject of a major retrospective exhibiton in the RHA Gallagher Galleries in Dublin, and the Ulster Museum in Belfast. His work is included in many public, private and corporate collections. He is represented by the Taylor Galleries in Dublin, The John Martin Gallery in London and the Mullan Gallery in Belfast.
