Last October the news came through that a killer fungus had arrived in Ireland, which will probably destroy all our native ash trees. How heartbreaking, to think that a microscopic organism could bring all these majestic giants to their knees.

Ireland has 19,000 hectares of Fraxinus Excelsior trees and they have a practical use today for fuel, furniture and hurleys, but their link to concepts of birth and renewal add to their historical significance. Since ancient times the ash tree’s powers of healing, strength and spiritual protection gave it a mythical and magical status in our lives.

So many holes in our natural landscape and our heritage, how could we ever hope to fill them?

In Germany and Denmark where the “ash dieback” has caused devastation, research reports have indicated genetic resistance in varieties from other areas of the world, such as Pennsylvanica and this one, Sieboldiana, which are holding out. (It is reminiscent of the destructive Dutch Elm disease where our native Wych Elm showed resistance).

Like the ash trees, despite the constant threats we face - biological, chemical or natural wipe out - we somehow keep on keeping on. God, meteors, bird flu, nuclear holocausts..... they may or may not happen, but if they do I'm betting some form of life will break through and continue on.

Optimism wins through!
